{"id":37872,"date":"2024-07-28T11:53:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-28T08:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/demo.kupitiblog.ru\/532\/lululemon-canadian-sportswear-brand-accused-of-greenwashing-ahead-of-olympic-opening-ceremony\/"},"modified":"2024-07-28T11:53:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-28T08:53:00","slug":"lululemon-canadian-sportswear-brand-accused-of-greenwashing-ahead-of-olympic-opening-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/demo.kupitiblog.ru\/532\/lululemon-canadian-sportswear-brand-accused-of-greenwashing-ahead-of-olympic-opening-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Lululemon: Canadian sportswear brand accused of greenwashing ahead of Olympic opening ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/demo.kupitiblog.ru\/532\/wp-content\/uploads\/b81f052125929abff0fe91b45f73139e.jpg\" alt=\"Lululemon: Canadian sportswear brand accused of greenwashing ahead of Olympic opening ceremony  \" \/><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the cusp of the Olympics, popular athleisure brand and official Team Canada outfitter Lulumon has been accused of greenwashing in France.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian environmental campaign group Stand.earth filed a legal complaint yesterday based on the retailer\u2019s \u2018Be Planet\u2019 campaign, which it says contradicts the company\u2019s climate record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>This follows a similar legal complaint in <strong>Canada<\/strong>, and recent protests at Lululemon shops including at the company\u2019s flagship Vancouver store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are asking French officials to investigate how Lululemon can claim to \u2018Be Planet\u2019 while creating more planet-harming emissions every year than half a million cars,\u201d says Stand executive director Todd Paglia.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"widget__related_list\">\n<li class=\"widget__related_listItem\">Paris Mayor swims in Seine river but will it really be clean enough to host Olympic events?<\/li>\n<li class=\"widget__related_listItem\">&#8216;Heat is a killer&#8217;: Experts explain why it matters that heat records were broken this week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why has Lulumon been accused of greenwashing?<\/h2>\n<p>At the Summer Olympics opening ceremony tomorrow (26 July), Canada\u2019s Olympic athletes will be donning new red and white designs from Lululemon &#8211; the national team\u2019s official outfitter since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>While the retailer looks to impress, Stand is hoping its complaint lands well with the French Directorate General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF).<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Be Planet\u2019 marketing campaign launched in 2020 featuring images of rivers, healthy forests and nature to sell a \u201cvague\u201d message that Lululemon contributes to a \u201chealthy\u201d planet, according to Stand.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental advocacy group says that is in \u201cglaring\u201d contradiction to Lululemon\u2019s actual operations. Since deploying the slogan, Stand says the fashion firm\u2019s scope 3 emissions (its indirect pollution) more than doubled by 2022, to 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lululemon<\/strong>\u2019s 2023 Impact Report also reveals that more than 60 per cent of the materials it uses are fossil-fuel derived and non-biodegradable &#8211; mostly polyester and nylon &#8211; contributing to environmental pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur athletes deserve to be at their absolute best in a brand that aligns with their values as Canadians, and not misled by deceptive and greenwashing marketing,\u201d says Stand senior corporate climate campaigner Rachel Kitchin.<\/p>\n<p>She drew a comparison to other Olympic kit sponsors which are delivering renewable energy and emissions cuts. In Stand\u2019s latest <strong>scorecard<\/strong> for the world\u2019s top fashion companies, for example, Puma and Nike scored relatively well for their use of renewable electricity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"widget__related_list\">\n<li class=\"widget__related_listItem\">\u2018Built for years, not for seasons\u2019: Why Patagonia believes going out of fashion is good for business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A \u2018first test\u2019 for the French regulator against greenwashing<\/h2>\n<p>Stand says the complaint marks \u201cthe first test\u201d of the French regulator\u2019s readiness for a wave of new European legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In January this year, the EU passed a new <strong>greenwashing directive<\/strong> which seeks to ban misleading environmental claims. It requires sustainability claims to be checked by an independent and accredited verifier.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint notes that Lululemon France\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions are relatively low &#8211; but says they do not reflect the extent of Lululemon Athletica\u2019s scope 3 emissions in its global supply chain to which the French subsidiary has access.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Stand filed a similar complaint in Canada which resulted in the Competition Bureau Canada officially opening an inquiry in April to investigate concerns that the company misleads customers about its environmental impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Protest actions have also been ramping up in recent weeks. On Monday, activists staged a street performance outside the athleisure giant\u2019s Vancouver flagship store.
